Alexei Ymer-Welsby is a director and producer working across film, TV and theatre. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (honours) from the University of Melbourne with majors in English and Theatre Studies and French, and a Masters in Fine Arts (Directing) from NIDA.
Alexei is passionate about visual storytelling. His short films have been programmed at the Melbourne International Film Festival, Flickerfest and St Kilda Film Festival.
In 2021 Alexei directed The Flick by Annie Baker (Actors Centre Australia), the triple J Unearthed X Rage music video IDK for The Terrys and was the assistant director to Heather Fairbairn on Alice Birch’s Revolt, She Said Revolt Again (NIDA). In 2022 he completed a directing secondment with Kip Williams on Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde at STC.
His NIDA graduate piece was a reimagining of Pirandello’s magical and melancholic play The Life That I Gave You, about a grieving mother and her attempts to keep her dead son alive.
Alexei has also worked extensively as a producer on some of Australia’s most successful programmes including Survivor (Channel 10), Shaun Micalef’s Origin Odyssey (SBS) and Headliners (ABC).
